Contrary to popular speculation, many paladins enjoy games of chance, but it is extremely discouraged to use them for gain or loss of anything but idle relaxation and the passing of time in a light manner.
The game Liberty is most favored among travelling paladins for it’s simple nature and required pieces of only a handful of die: an easy to carry item and just as easy to make if none are on hand, and entirely playable with as few or as many players as desired.
A reasonable little game to play alone if the paladin is stuck waiting for a while, or wishes to get friendly with the local merchants.
Liberty is a game played with nothing but dice, and generally quite a lot of them ranging from an absolute minimum of two per player and ranging up to hundreds of die, though most commonly played with six dice to a player.
At the beginning of the game a player rolls one die to decide the “Hero” number, from then on they take turns rolling their entire hand of die: each dice that lands on that number is out of the game, and the first player to lose all their dice is the victor.
Another version of the game designed to take longer and be more exact, Bitter Liberty is very much of the same core as its normal counterpart but with an added dice at the beginning of each turn to decide how many die that player gets to roll that go.
Though less commonly spoken of, the game of Liberty does in fact have some history to the roles and the notion of it, though it has not been used in the original intention for many years.
The player (or players) take the role of a commander, and the handful of dice each a soldier under their order; the “Hero” number is a symbol for loyalty, and the commanders are rolling for each conflict to see if their men are brave and loyal or cowards doomed to the enemy dungeon.
Simple and yet fitting, the game was originally designed to assist in the planning and practice of war tactics, as the element of the unplanned and emotion of fleeting panic was too easily ignored when so much was at stake.
However the exact way they did this tactically has been lost, and it is very difficult to use as anything but a game nowadays.
